New idea – more to come… soon.

August 30th, 2011

Frequent visitors to this blog (which currently consists of a few webcrawling bots and a spammer).  will undoubtedly tell you that I have made a couple of promises to put more effort into this blog. About three months ago, I stated that I was going to pursue regular updates with renewed vigor.

This update is not a continuation on that promise, but rather a proclamation of change.  I personally do not follow that many blogs.  Most of those that I do follow, I follow via rss feed. One of my original intentions was to purchase this space to use as an outlet for my frustration: personal, political, religious, professional, etc.  There is a multibillion dollar “news” industry that seems to have evolved from any sort of free press information dissemination mechanism into an outlet for spreading FUD across every aspect of human existence.  I want to turn this little corner of the web into something different.

I’m not ready to give details of what that means just yet, but I haven’t forgotten about this and instead of regurgitating the barrage of excrement that is readily available throughout the world, (and seems to gravitate toward the mainstream web).  There is something better to do with my time.

The first step (as any former alchoholic will tell you) is to admit that you have a problem.  Somewhere in between the first  step and the last is separating the wheat from the chaff. The end result hopefully will be to have something good to share.  Once that is done, there will be a noticeable transformation of this site.  So keep your eyes peeled googlebot.

I hate allergies, and colds too for that matter.

June 28th, 2011

This is of course the first of the regular (daily, for those who are paying attention) posts that I’ll be making here now that I have all this free time and a laptop with a mobile internet connection.   Really, being trapped in a cargo container that is filled with people doesn’t seem to hamper my ability to not want to do things that are directly related to goofing off when I’m not at my desk.

Having admitted my horrible inability to spend my dwindling spare time writing self satisfying diatribes on a webpage for the enjoyment of probably no one, even though I promised (probably no one):  I fucking hate not being able to breathe through my nose.  Even more so when my nostrils forget that their god given purpose and imitate a faucet.

So on the train ride home,  having both run out of, and forgotten extra kleenex at the office, I have briefly considered both blowing my nose into a shout wipe, and farmer snotting the mother lode of mucous that is currently oozing out of my left nostril.   Since everyone on the train with me was spared from the visual entertainment that this would have provided, you’re welcome.

Smooches,

Google Public DNS

February 3rd, 2011

For those of us who have frequent network outages due to our ISP not properly maintaining their DNS servers (read: Comcast customers), here is one thing that you can do to not only ensure that your outages will be far less frequent, but decrease the amount of time that you have to wait for internet addresses to resolve.  Use Google public DNS servers instead of the ones that your ISP automatically assigns.

Brew Pub Glass – Rothbard

December 19th, 2010

This treasure – one of a kind, first one ever, a monument to liberty like none other – needs no real explanation. But reflect on this: thanks to the state, there was a time in American history when this great glass could not be legally filled with anything but water or tea.  Today, it is different. Use your liberty to drink wisely, and publicly, and make a statement about the ideas of liberty at the same time.  The great man who dedicated his life to libertys defense, Murray N. Rothbard, is memorialized on this beautiful glass.20oz , clear glass beer mug, with a heavy base. “Enemy of the State”

Systems Analyst == Film Critic?

December 9th, 2010

I have come to the conclusion that the skill set of a computer systems analyst is very closely related to that of a film critic.

  • Highly skilled in the methods used to produce the final product (software/film) but less practiced than someone who does it all the time.
  • The people for whom the criticism is on their behalf often do not understand the reasoning behind the criticism.
  • The producers of the (software/film) could often care less.
  • They know how to considerably reduce or improve the effectiveness of the product by manipulating the environment in which is is used.

Doofus dotcom

November 8th, 2010

Being that most of my “work” and “everything else that I do” are done over the internet, I occasionally get an idea for a website, service , hobby, etc. and check to see if it already exists. This one is good:

doofus.com

Since this site will eventually host something other than this blog, I will need a place to put it (if all else fails, there’s always wordpress.com).

Suggestions are welcome (they must be available).

Illinois Review: Life, Liberty, Labno

October 25th, 2010

I’m actually a little surprised to see this in the Illinois Review.  Sam Pierce has  a lot of courage to write with this kind of honesty.  I still take issue with the fact that Libertarians are being portrayed as an alternative to conservatives (only), but it’s a start.

Still getting started

October 16th, 2010

Apparently, I’m still figuring out how to get this blog started.  At this point, I don’t know if it’s that I’m too busy to actually post anything worth reading to my blog, I’m too private to post anything that’s personally relevant, or if I’m just a horrible procrastinator.   All things considered, It’s probably a little bit of all three of those things combined with not wanting to put something on the internet to represent me unless it is perfect.  God forbid I should share my disorganized thoughts in writing and publicly.  Dammit Jim, I’m a nerd not a writer.

Up until now my posts have been nothing more than links or embedded videos or whatnot.  Most without any real comment or context.  While I do plan to share (most of) my bookmarks here eventually, I haven’t started on that yet.   I have at least given myself some idea of the topics that I want to represent here, and a means of categorizing my thoughts.   It is a bit disturbing that my professional life, politics, and the coming zombie apocalypse have made it here, but God has not.  That does not represent my life as a whole, but does unfortunately represent where my head has been most of the time lately (sans zombie apocalypse).   My life always seems out of control when I lose track of my priorities.

  1. Following Christ
  2. My Family
  3. My Job
  4. Everything Else

If you are reading this post and either admiring how the posts here seem to parallel those priorities and their associated values, rest assured that I’m living well. If not, let me know. I need a good swift kick in the butt every once in a while.
